Clearly, the problem is that they're smart. Being smart is definitely a sin these days. But are our heroes really smart? …Reste à prouver, car il s’agit d’une présomption non irréfragable ! Moi personnellement j’en doute ! It might be because they do just what the law requires and not what it takes to make everyone happy.
Furthermore, lawyers are snobbish, pretentious and always want to be right. They are self-centred, egotistical, selfish, self-absorbed, self-interested, narcissistic, big-headed, and arrogant!

Action against alcohol abuse - Only one glass per day
Dear All,
I would like to raise the attention on one of the main problems affecting our society: alcohol abuse.
Following the discussion brought on by the DG SANCO of the Commission ("Discussion Paper on the EU strategy on alcohol", the most "active" trainees of the Council of the EU have decided to participate in this commitment on tackling alcohol abuse.
The first action taken has been "Only one glass per day", aimed at stimulating the consumption of high quality alcoholic drinks but in a responsible manner.
We have created an association (with the same name "Only one glass per day") open to everyone who believes in the importance and the efficacy of our commitment.
The inauguration of the association (during which Mr Alessandro Vivaldi has been nominated president) was very successfull as you can see in the picture.

The European Vodka Alliance is urgently seeking to recruit an intern for a period of six months, starting immediately, to assist in the day-to-day management of the campaign against the revision of the existing definition of Vodka.
Responsibilities will include:
arranging and preparing meetings; liaising with EU personnel; keeping abreast of relevant developments; drafting press releases; preparing and circulating briefing materials for use by Alliance members.
Requirements:
Applicants must:
be resposible well organised and able to work independently be fluent in English and French; have knowledge of other European languages considered an asset; have good interpersonal skills and be able to work with people from different cultural backgrounds; be familiar with the workings of the European Institutions; be computer literate (word, excel, access) .
This is an exciting opportunity to gain first hand experience in the management of issues at European level. In addition we are offering a salary of circa €1000 per month.

Le 9 mai 1950, la presse fut invitée dans le Salon de l'Horloge du ministère français des Affaires étrangères, au Quai d'Orsay, pour entendre la déclaration de Robert Schuman, Ministre français des Affaires étrangères (rédigée conjointement avec Jean Monnet).
Voici un extrait :
« La paix mondiale ne saurait être sauvegardée sans des efforts créateurs à la mesure des dangers qui la menacent.
La contribution qu'une Europe organisée et vivante peut apporter à la civilisation est indispensable au maintien des relations pacifiques. En se faisant depuis plus de vingt ans le champion d'une Europe unie, la France a toujours eu pour objet essentiel de servir la paix. L'Europe n'a pas été faite, nous avons eu la guerre.
L'Europe ne se fera pas d'un coup, ni dans une construction d'ensemble : elle se fera par des réalisations concrètes créant d'abord une solidarité de fait. Le rassemblement des nations européennes exige que l'opposition séculaire de la France et de l'Allemagne soit éliminée. L'action entreprise doit toucher au premier chef la France et l'Allemagne.Dans ce but, le gouvernement français propose immédiatement l'action sur un point limité mais décisif. Le gouvernement français propose de placer l'ensemble de la production franco-allemande de charbon et d'acier sous une Haute Autorité commune, dans une organisation ouverte à la participation des autres pays d'Europe. »
Ce projet est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’acte de naissance de la construction européenne. Il est à l’origine de la première communauté européenne : la CECA (Communauté européenne du charbon et de l’acier) qui voit le jour en 1951.
Lors du Conseil européen de Milan, en juin 1985, les États membres se sont mis d’accord pour célébrer cette date symbolique, devenue "journée de l’Europe".

Mea culpa
The football tournament started great for us as we won our first match against the Relex Commission team (Strictement des-conseillers – Bolshy tolchocks 3:1).
Mais après, les choses se sont gâtées. On Saturday, we played against Diversity United… and we lost (5:3) because of me!
As a goalkeeper, I thought I must position myself far enough off the goal line to cover the angle… 
but now, avec le recul, I think I should change my contact lenses.
On the way back home, somebody heard me singing:
Soy un perdedor I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me?

Art
L.S.,In the renewed spirit of attention for art (see previous post), I would like to take this moment to devote some attention to Karel Appel, the Netherlands' most famous painter in the post-war era, who has died on Wednesday, age 85.
He was unique in his ability to piss off the 1950s Holland by making things "that my 5-year old nephew could make if you give him some paint". So to the question whether this type of thing is really art (cf. Jackson Pollock, etc.), the answer is really simple: If so many people spend so much time arguing about it, it must be art.

A few days ago the Regional Administrative Court of Catania upheld an appeal by a young homosexual whose driving licence had previously been withdrawn on grounds of ‘sexual identity problems’.
In upholding the appeal, the Court stated that ‘sexual preferences have no bearing whatsoever on the ability to drive a motor vehicle safely’, since they are ‘merely a personality disorder’.
Article 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union prohibits any discrimination based on sex or sexual orientation. Article 13 of the EC Treaty provides that the Council may take appropriate action to combat discrimination based on sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation.
Does the Council not consider it to be vital and urgent for the European Union to take measures to prevent any possible discrimination and prejudice based on sexual orientation?
What action will it take on this matter in the coming months?
