36º in Brussels

Do you remember this little sun that was posted on the blog on February…Ohhh it was so nice to see it for a couple of minutes during winter…. Now…ufff…he decided to come…and stay… and Brussels is warmer than ever, according to our correspondent in Sevilla (Ms. De La Plaza Canete), is even warmer than the south of Spain! It just impossible to walk on the street, to stay in the park, to stay at home…or to sleep…fortunately…someone invented the fridge!
36 degrees in Brussels…and no holidays in the horizon!!
Well, wish you all good holidays, enjoy and hope to see you sun…ups soon (effects of the heat)…

L.S.,

Like I've been trying to say for the last six months, this far north we have actual weather, and actual seasons, meaning that the temperature isn't always the same. In winter it is cold, and this winter was pretty soft (long live global warming) and in summer it is warm and humid, making you wish for that nice, cool, Andalusia.

Here in Austria it is f*** hot too. 34.6 degrees in the shadow. And believe me, for Austria it is really a lot. But for the farmers it is the best time for their hay harvest. The weather forecast predicts that it is getting warmer in the next days. At least we haven’t got any water problems like the southern part of Europe. Anyway, enjoy the sun. Even if some of us are wishing it would rain down, down on us.

L.S.,

Chris, dude, you're a very unusual farmer, to rejoice while the crops are schriveling in the sun... The way things are going, farmers around Europe are going to end up growing popcorn and raisins instead of maize and grapes.

That’s the advantage in cattle/stock-breeding. In the past years we always had problems to get in our hay harvest (3times in summer), cause we needed 3 sunny days in a row, to bring the harvest in. This week gave us the possibility to mow everything down for drying. Otherwise, if the hay is just a little bit wet, we risk fouling. Then it would be useless for everyone. And the best upbringing of breed is a combination of best quality hay and silo: I mean, the animals wouldn’t die if they eat just one type of forage but our experiences showed us that the best way is a combination.

L.S.,

Here's the explanation:

"Atmospheric blocking leads to a stagnation of weather patterns. As you are well aware, atmospheric patterns tend to repeat themselves. In the case of blocking, the same pattern repeats for several days to even weeks. This can lead to flooding, drought, above normal temperatures, below normal temperatures and other weather extremes. It is important to recognize a blocking pattern in its initial development. With this awareness, you will be able to forecast out to several days in advance with a high degree of accuracy.

Atmospheric blocking is best seen on upper air analysis and forecast charts. Blocking over large regions is most common with high-pressure since high pressure covers a large spatial area and tends to move slower than low pressure. In some instances, low pressure can also cause an atmospheric block. The five types of blocks that will be represented in this section are the omega block, the Rex block, the Ring of Fire, Split flow and the cut-off low. Each is detailed separately.

OMEGA BLOCK

*It resembles the Greek letter Omega. The 500-millibar panel from 29 APR 99 to May 1 shows an example of this blocking pattern. Air over the Southwest US in forced to the north into Canada and then back south into the Southeast US by the huge high-pressure ridge in the center of the country. The region under the omega block experiences dry weather and light wind for an extended period of time while rain and clouds are common in association with the two troughs on either side of the omega block. Omega blocks make forecasting easier since you can pinpoint areas that will be dominated by dry or rainy weather for several days. The right side of the omega block will have below normal temperatures while the region to the left will have above normal temperatures in this case."

OK, it turns out this whole Omega thing was rubbish, given that it already rained in Brussels this morning, and that the rain has since come here. And the poor football players, playing in this horrible weather... (My office looks out at the football stadium across the street. There's an Intertoto match going on at the moment.)

L.S.,

@Nace: Is Bulgaria too far south for you? Maybe you should try something cooler, like Scandinavia? Stockholm has 21 degrees on Thursday.

Martin

Atanaska a dit…

no, martin, bulgaria is not too far south for me, it's that I live in the southern part (with the highest temperature in the country).
unfortunately, I can’t go to sweden, because my swedish friend still hates me (remember the that Coreper I… ), but I could visit one of my best Finnish friends: Anu Uuttu ;)))

L.S.,

I'm sorry that I ruined that for you, Swedish people are usually much like the Dutch. Anyway, he was too old for you anyway.

Martin

Atanaska a dit…

yes, you ruined everything.
maybe he looks old to you, but he was not too much older than I am.

With that hair line, he must have been at least 35.
